Responding to and Reporting an Injury or Illness

Injury Response

Injuries and illnesses must be addressed immediately.

Obtain medical care as quickly as possible, but only appropriately trained personnel should provide first aid.

Call 911 for any injury or illness that requires emergency treatment.  If you’re not sure whether the situation is a true emergency, call 911 and let the call-taker determine whether you need emergency help.

In all other situations, request that the parent/guardian pick up the child and transport him or her to a medical facility or request that the parent/guardian give permission for the program to transport the child to a medical facility.

In situations that do not require a call to 911, you may transport a sick or injured child to a medical facility in a private vehicle if

  • the parent/guardian is not available or has given his/her permission and
  • a private vehicle is the safest means to transport the child.
