Sports and Recreation

  1. Require a fitness-to-participate or a sports physical from a professional health care provider.
  2. Ensure that program supervisors have certification or documented training and experience in the activities for which they are responsible.
  3. Accurately explain the nature of activities, physical requirements, and potential for injuries in promotional materials.
  4. Ensure that activities are appropriate for minors’ skill levels.
  5. Ensure that participants and supervisors wear appropriate protective gear and clothing.
  6. Ensure that participants do not have access to sports equipment or facilities when supervisors are not present.
  7. If the program involves water activities:
  • ensure that certified lifeguards are on duty during water activities;
  • review safety considerations with minors before beginning activities; and
  • contact Yale’s Risk Management office if water activities will take place off campus.
